Access to Work funding
This information is of use to employers and to individuals who are:
- in employment
- self employed
- unemployed but about to start a job or work trial.
The government (through Job Centre Plus) provides funding to help people with “protected characteristics” succeed at work. Protected characteristics are defined in the Equality Act 2010 and include dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, etc.
The funds can be used to provide:
- specialist equipment (including computer assistive technology)
- job coaching support
- awareness-raising training in the workplace for colleagues and managers.
Access to work arranges a needs assessment to identify what you are entitled to. The financial allocation is shared between Job Centre Plus and your employer, depending on the size of the company. Small employers and self-employed individuals may qualify for 100% funding.
